Ameera Shah – Metropolis Healthcare Ltd.

Ms. Ameera Shah is the Managing Director and Promoter of Metropolis Healthcare Ltd. At the age of 43, she is a self-made Billionaire with several awards and recognition to her name. She has revolutionized the pathology industry from being a doctor-led unregulated, competitive, and fragmented market to a professional corporate group.

Her understanding of the pathology lab industry is deep and thorough. Even though she has no formal education in science; she has managed to create a revolution in the pathology lab industry. The seeds of this revolution were sown in her early childhood when young Ameera used to join her father, Dr. Sushil Shah in his small Laboratory throughout her summer and winter holidays. Her father was a Pathologist by profession and run a small traditionally operated path lab with no computer systems, emails, techniques, and processes in Mumbai. Ameera assisted her father at his Lab by writing the payments, replying to the patients on the telephone, and even cleansing the arms of the patients before compounders took blood samples. She even helped visitors and patients with a lab tour.

Later, Ms. Ameera Shah went to the USA for her higher education in Management. After completing her higher education, she had a stint with Goldman Sachs in New York. During her time in New York, she was impressed by the ideologies and strategies of Muhammed Yunus, a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, and the Nobel Peace Prize Winner. In an interview in 2020, she stated that she was inspired by Muhammed Yunus’ patriotism and decided to come back to India from the USA and joined her father’s path lab.

Under her leadership, Metropolis has evolved from its single-pathology laboratory to a fully integrated multinational chain of 170 diagnostic centers and more than 3000 collection centers across the globe. As of today, the company is valued at Rs. 8000 crores.

Forbes Asia listed Ameera Shah in Asia’s Most Powerful Women, 2015, for powering the rise of Metropolis Healthcare and bringing a significant shift in the diagnostics industry. In 2017, Ms. Shah began a non-profit group and named it- ‘Empoweress.’ It was set up for budding and novice businesswomen who needed to hunt for help in establishing new ventures and people who wanted micro-funding.
